Rock in Rio's City of Rock

Fred Mercury became the conductor of almost half million people. The actual band cites that experience as one of the most beautiful in their history.

I remember 30 years ago, the first Rock in Rio... The forecast for that day was "heavy rain", so we were watching the festival on the TV with some friends at Rosane's, when, suddenly we heard *Nelsinho Motta saying this: "I can't believe. They're singing in English". Huh?

Rock in Rio was born on the summer of 1985, in the city that gave it its name, Rio de Janeiro. Staged by entrepreneur **Roberto Medina and his advertising agency, Artplan, Rock in Rio took place in January in the Barra da Tijuca, suburbs of Rio de Janeiro.

Roberto Medina dreams big, but maybe, not even in his wildest dream he could predict that a million and a half people would gathered at the first Rock in Rio over the course of ten days.

The line-up included names like Queen, AC/DC, James Taylor, George Benson, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Al Jarreau, The Gogos, Whitesnake, Scorpions, The B-52, Nina Hagen. and Iron Maiden; some of the top Brazilian stars like Gilberto Gil, Elba Ramalho, Rita Lee, Paralamas do Sucesso, Blitz, Kid Abelha, Ney Matogrosso, Ivan Lins,  Baby Consuelo and Pepeu Gomes. Moraes Moreira, Eduardo Dusek, Alceu Valença and Barão Vermelho

Rock in Rio is a festival for all styles and the public is always part of the show, since the first one. The first Rock in Rio featured some historical moments like during the hit Love of My LifeFreddie Mercury was so impressed with the spontaneous sing-along from the public that he decided to direct the performance of the audience. He became the conductor of almost half million people. I can only imagine how he fell. Click here to watch it. The actual band cites that experience as one of the most beautiful in their history.

The pictures, on the left, are a Rock in Rio guitar where the City of Rock is under construction and the City of Rock grounds. There is almost nothing where it will take place and we are just five months away to the largest city gathering ever.

Las Vegas Autumn

Las Vegas skies are so beautiful this time of the year

Las Vegas skies are so beautiful this time of the year; sometimes look like they are on fire. There is a natural side to the city and surrounding areas that is often overshadowed by the shimmering neon.

Lake Mead, for example, is just about 45 minutes from the Strip and the Sunset Park is about 15 minutes.

It is the best time to visit Red Rock Canyon which is less than an hour from the Strip. From there, it is close to visit also Spring Mountains and Cathedral Rock at Mount Charleston. Valley of Fire is also less than an hour from the Strip. And, of course, the Grand Canyon, among many other natural wonders.

Jeff Dunham and Achmed to "blow up" Las Vegas

Jeff Dunham and his entourage of characters brings Achmed the Dead Terrorist “I kill you. Silence!”, Jose Jalapeno on a stick and all other dummies to make part of  "Not Playing With a Full Deck"

+Jeff Dunham is moving, starting today, into the 1,400-seat Planet Hollywood Theater, just upstairs from Britney Spears. Shoot! What’s Achmed going to say about her being just downstairs?

The new Planet Hollywood deal is for six shows a week for three weeks a month by May 31, 2015 or maybe during one year. And, as Jeff Dunham is saying, "within a year, it’ll be time for us to tape the next DVD.”

+Jeff Dunham and his entourage of signature characters brings Achmed the Dead Terrorist “I kill you. Silence!”, Jose Jalapeno on a stick and all other dummies to make part of  "Not Playing With a Full Deck".

+Jeff Dunham new character just born in Vegas. His name is a well-kept secret. All we know is he was molded out of clay, dried, baked, scanned with a 3D scanner and got the shell of its head printed with a 3D printer and finally installed all the mechanics. Can't wait to see it.

KISS rocks Vegas

“Rock and Roll All Nite,” culminated with Stanley smashing his guitar onstage as explosion after explosion rocked the room.

by Bea Taylor
KISS has recently embarked on a “40th Anniversary Tour”. They have now come to Las Vegas and, for the first time in their history, booked a residency of nine shows, all played at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel November 5 through November 23. The Joint, a 4,000-capacity/venue is a relatively small place for such a show, and that’s exactly the spirit of it.

On the opening night, there was a huge concentration of fans outside the Hard Rock Hotel, waiting for the members of KISS arrive by helicopter.

"Tonight, size doesn't count" KISS’ singer/rhythm guitarist Paul Stanley announced a little after, three songs into the set.

The 16 song set list contained few surprises, “Creatures of the Night” as the opener was one of them, and they did manage to throw in a more rocking version of the rarely played "Tears are Falling”, a near hit from 1985.

The show lasted around ninety minutes, paused only to give stage time to a charitable organization that presented a house to a Vegas-based war veteran.

At the end of the show, lots of confetti turned The Joint into a colorful blizzard. “Rock and Roll All Nite” culminated with Stanley smashing his guitar onstage as explosion after explosion rocked the room.

Tinariwen Wows Vegas

Welcome to the Sahara Desert!

by Bea Taylor
Event: +Tinariwen at the The Bunkhouse Saloon, Downtown Las Vegas, October 21st

The opening act was singer-songwriter Howe Gelb, from Giant Sand, an American rock band, based in Tucson, Arizona. He played an intimate electric/acoustic set which fit well the mood of the evening.

+Tinariwen was warmly welcomed into the stage and began by chanting their hypnotic desert blues songs, receiving multiple standing ovations by an enthusiastic crowd.

All of them dressed up in their colorful tuareg robes, they played for over an hour, and between songs greeted the audience with words like, "ça va? It's okay?" to the delight of all.

Their music is very well crafted, deeply rooted in the Mali tradition, updated with groovy, funky bass lines and bluesy guitar patterns.

The Bunkhouse proved to be a great place for this laid back experience, a very well organized and safe place it seemed.

Las Vegas 2014 Jazz Festival

Sax titans Euge Groove and Richard Elliot will spar during a raucous heavyweight jazz, soul and funk session.

The third edition of Las Vegas Jazz Festival taking place September 19-21 will be the largest gathering yet. Twenty big rollers – as in Grammy winners and nominees and No. 1 hit-makers - in contemporary jazz, R&B, soul and funk are booked to perform for thousands of exuberant fans coming in from all over the country. The Las Vegas Jazz Festival attracts an upscale urban adult audience that immerses themselves in a weekend of live music and lavish living provided by the first-class resort.

Top-lining the opening night marquee is a pair of old school R&B funksters: Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and Cameo. Young saxophone turk +Eric Darius will start the party that lasts all weekend long.

By day, the Saturday lineup at the Las Vegas Jazz Festival puts the focus on jazz. Guitarist Tim Bowman opens followed by the first ladies of jazz, Jazz in Pink featuring Gail Johnson, Karen Briggs and special guest Jeanette Harris. Sax titans Euge Groove and Richard Elliot will spar during a raucous heavyweight jazz, soul and funk session. The evening portion is devoted to R and;B crooners with hitmen Eric Benet, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Keith Sweat taking the stage to perform solo sets.

Sunday is a more balanced blend of instrumentalists and vocalists starting with a few fresh faces – saxophonists Elan Trotman and Jessy J and singer +Selina Albright – teaming for the opening segment. The powerhouse voice of Leela James will precede the debonair and sultry vocal styling of Will Downing. Contemporary jazz multi-instrumentalist Brian Culbertson uncorks his effervescent energy while rifling through his hit-filled catalogue of multihued melodies and jazz-funk grooves. Ledisi’s sophisticated sound in perfectly suited for the evening bill while Grammy-winner Anthony Hamilton’s gravel and grit voice will cap the weekend in full-throated R and B mode.

The Rat Pack is Backthe award-winning tribute show to the original big band entertainers, The Rat Pack is back in Vegas

In the mid-1960s, the Rat Pack - Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Dean Martin brought fame and recognition to the city as both an entertainment capital and gambling destination during their run inside the Copa Room at the Sands. They sold out almost all of their appearances, and people would come pouring into Las Vegas, sometimes sleeping in cars and hotel lobbies when they could not find rooms, just to be part of the Rat Pack entertainment experience.

Today, audiences can relive the revelry and timeless music of the Rat Pack era in the show The Rat Pack is Back at the Crown Theater and no need to sleep in your car;  just book a room at the Rio All-Suites Las Vegas.

Video screens on both sides of the stage show clips of Vegas in its heyday, putting you in the mood of when the Rat Pack ruled the StripThis Las Vegas production recreates the Rat Pack’s most famous musical numbers. Each tribute artist has nailed down their Rat Pack member’s singing, looks, and mannerisms. So when you hear classic songs like “Fly Me To The Moon,” “Luck Be A Lady” and “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head,” you’ll have to do a double-take. And just like the original Rat Pack, anyone and everyone can show up during the show.

Frank, Sammy, Joey and Dean reunite on stage to belt out a few more classics including "Luck Be a Lady," "Lady is a Tramp" and "New York, New York."

Dirk Vermin "Bad Ink" Farewell

This Wednesday night Aug 20 as we bid a fond farewell to the "experiment" known as "BAD INK". I can't express how much your support of me personally still means!

by Dirk Vermin
On August 20 we say goodbye to "Bad Ink". This final episode ends my two seasons on A&E. No tears are necessary. I do not now, nor ever did, have any ownership of the show. "Bad Ink" was always the property of the network and the 24 episodes I worked my ass off for were enough for me.

It would have been nice to continue as I felt the series had the potential for greater things but this is not my decision. I was never a fan of some of the silliness of Season 1 (I don't actually build dog houses or bake cakes) but I stand by my tattooing and was especially proud that Season 2 showcased and proved the fact that I'm a damn good tattoo artist.
You all helped make the show successful in spite of any real promotion, except social media, and it worked! We are still a bona-fide hit worldwide. I can't thank you all enough for the support throughout the past two seasons on Facebook and Twitter and I will try to be more active on both.

So what what's next on my insane agenda?  All I can say is stay tuned for bigger and better things. Priority one is finishing my first book:

The Devil and Dirk Vermin?!
(An unapologetic and not so modest history of growing up in and surviving Las Vegas with a completely biased social commentary loaded with subversive and agnostic ideology on the way to selling my soul to become a short-lived reality TV star)

This is all MINE, unfiltered and unapologetic. No networks, producers or editors looking over my shoulder.

Look for an early 2015 release.

You can also look forward to a brand new album from The Vermin, a YouTube channel and the launch of my personal channel on

Most importantly, I wanted to use this as a message to all of my fans - I LOVE you all and have truly been humbled by all the support, both for the show and me personally, but make no mistake, "television is something I did, not who I am."

To the network: Thanks for the fame, I'll take it from here.

PS:  Television is a strange universe that I'm glad to escape for awhile but do stay tuned... SO much more is coming. More than you can imagine. More than I can tell!

So on our final episode? Do me a huge favor. Turn on the TV when the show starts, not before, and turn it off when show ends. I think that says it all...See you Wednesday!!! It's a good episode! #DIRKVERMIN
