Rock in Rio's City of Rock

Fred Mercury became the conductor of almost half million people. The actual band cites that experience as one of the most beautiful in their history.

I remember 30 years ago, the first Rock in Rio... The forecast for that day was "heavy rain", so we were watching the festival on the TV with some friends at Rosane's, when, suddenly we heard *Nelsinho Motta saying this: "I can't believe. They're singing in English". Huh?

Rock in Rio was born on the summer of 1985, in the city that gave it its name, Rio de Janeiro. Staged by entrepreneur **Roberto Medina and his advertising agency, Artplan, Rock in Rio took place in January in the Barra da Tijuca, suburbs of Rio de Janeiro.

Roberto Medina dreams big, but maybe, not even in his wildest dream he could predict that a million and a half people would gathered at the first Rock in Rio over the course of ten days.

The line-up included names like Queen, AC/DC, James Taylor, George Benson, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Al Jarreau, The Gogos, Whitesnake, Scorpions, The B-52, Nina Hagen. and Iron Maiden; some of the top Brazilian stars like Gilberto Gil, Elba Ramalho, Rita Lee, Paralamas do Sucesso, Blitz, Kid Abelha, Ney Matogrosso, Ivan Lins,  Baby Consuelo and Pepeu Gomes. Moraes Moreira, Eduardo Dusek, Alceu Valença and Barão Vermelho

Rock in Rio is a festival for all styles and the public is always part of the show, since the first one. The first Rock in Rio featured some historical moments like during the hit Love of My LifeFreddie Mercury was so impressed with the spontaneous sing-along from the public that he decided to direct the performance of the audience. He became the conductor of almost half million people. I can only imagine how he fell. Click here to watch it. The actual band cites that experience as one of the most beautiful in their history.

The pictures, on the left, are a Rock in Rio guitar where the City of Rock is under construction and the City of Rock grounds. There is almost nothing where it will take place and we are just five months away to the largest city gathering ever.

Las Vegas Autumn

Las Vegas skies are so beautiful this time of the year

Las Vegas skies are so beautiful this time of the year; sometimes look like they are on fire. There is a natural side to the city and surrounding areas that is often overshadowed by the shimmering neon.

Lake Mead, for example, is just about 45 minutes from the Strip and the Sunset Park is about 15 minutes.

It is the best time to visit Red Rock Canyon which is less than an hour from the Strip. From there, it is close to visit also Spring Mountains and Cathedral Rock at Mount Charleston. Valley of Fire is also less than an hour from the Strip. And, of course, the Grand Canyon, among many other natural wonders.
