How Las Vegas Became a National Data Center Powerhouse


The story of Las Vegas as a digital hub started in an unexpected place. The oldest major commercial data center in Las Vegas is Switch's East Sahara facility, which was acquired and repurposed in 2002.


The site sat directly on top of massive national fiber-optic lines built during the late-1990s tech boom. Recognizing its potential, Switch turned the facility into a carrier-neutral hub. As demand for internet storage exploded, the company expanded south, establishing its flagship Core Campus off South Decatur Boulevard and Warm Springs Road in 2008.

The Evolution of Switch Campuses

Switch has expanded far beyond East Sahara and South Decatur, establishing mega-campuses across five major U.S. regions:

 

The Core Campus (Las Vegas, NV): The original flagship, home to massive facilities like LAS 8, LAS 10, and expanding southwest toward South Rainbow Boulevard.

 The Citadel Campus (Tahoe-Reno, NV): Located near Sparks, Nevada, serving as the world’s largest single data center campus footprint.

 The Pyramid Campus (Grand Rapids, MI): Serving the Northeastern and Midwestern tech corridors.

 The Keep Campus (Atlanta, GA): Anchoring Southeastern enterprise and cloud connectivity.

 The Rock Campus (Austin/Houston, TX): Powering major Texas financial, energy, and tech markets.


States Relying on Nevada's Data Network

Las Vegas doesn't just store local data—it acts as a digital engine for the surrounding region:

 California: Serves as a vital low-latency backup and heavy-processing engine for Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and San Diego tech hubs.

 Arizona & Utah: Handles high-speed data handoffs for Phoenix and Salt Lake City's expanding cloud networks.

 National Reach: Connects transcontinental fiber pipelines spanning from Washington, Oregon, and Texas, all the way to East Coast corridors like New York and Virginia.


Why Las Vegas?

 Safety from Natural Disasters: Unlike California (earthquakes/wildfires), coastal regions (hurricanes/flooding), or the Midwest (tornadoes), Southern Nevada has an extremely low risk of natural disasters. That safety makes it an ideal spot for Fortune 500 companies, banks, tech firms, and government entities to host their most critical infrastructure.

 Massive Scale: Facilities like the Switch campus are so large that they hold thousands of separate companies' servers under one roof, giving the region outsized influence over the nation's digital infrastructure.
